Should you hire a web development consultant?

A comprehensive guide...

When you decide that you want to have a person or team dedicated to managing your website, you have 3 options: hire a full-time web developer or team, add it to the responsiblities of a current employee, or hire a web development consultant.

Hiring a full-time developer or team.

Hiring a full-time web developer is a good idea if you have the budget to support a new salary and enough initiatives for your website that deserve the full attention of an individual.

Hiring a full team is also a valid choice if you have enough work and budget to justify the expense. Each web developer can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 a year.

Adding it to the responsibilities of a current employee.

Adding responsibilities to an employee can have unintended consequences. Will the other work they are responsible for slow down? Will pulling their attention away from their normal responsibilites cause a slip in customer service, leading to bad reviews and lower sales?

Asking an employee to add web site management to their work duties may be a good idea if they are already slow on work, but be careful! You may find out that they were responsible for more than you originally thought.

When considering this option, ask yourself if you would rather that employee stay focused on their current responsibilities. If this is the case, hiring a consultant for a small portion of that employees salary may be the way to go.

Hiring a web development consultant.

Hiring a consultant to build and manage your website may be a good fit if you don't want your current bidget to sky-rocket and employee productivity to plummet.

Adding these responsibilities to an employee can cause more problems than it solves. Especially when you consider that for a portion of the cost of that employees salary you could hire a consultant to build and manage a website for you.

Customers won't wait for your website.

How fast your web site loads directly impacts your conversion rates. Users are impatient and expect web pages to load fast. A slow web page can cause customers to go to a competitor web site. Page speeds also influence SEO scores, affecting your reach.
